Seafood Shack Marina and Bar Sold To VANDYK Beloved Cortez, FL., landmark will retain iconic name, preserve menu favorites under new management

CORTEZ, FLORIDA, November 3, 2014Ownership of one of the Gulf Coast’s most prized local treasures has changed hands.

The picturesque Seafood Shack Marina and Bar, a local landmark in downtown Cortez, FL, has been acquired by Canadian developer, VANDYK group of companies, for $4 million.

The seller, Ham Jones, built the marina in 1971 and in 1972 added a 150-seat restaurant. “The overwhelming customer response to the original Seafood Shack led to several expansions, resulting in today’s two-storey 650-seat restaurant. For 32 of the past 42 years, our customers also delighted in boat tours of the Intracoastal Waterway aboard the 120 ft. paddlewheeler, ‘The Showboat’”, said Mr. Jones.

“Cortez represents old Florida at its very best,” said John Vandyk, President and CEO of VANDYK group of companies.

The sale of the six-acre property includes 1,000 ft. of shoreline, the 100-slip marina, 20,000 sq. ft. restaurant and banquet hall, lands currently hosting the famous Annie’s Bait and Tackle Shop, and other related marine amenities.

Cortez is the state’s oldest surviving fishing village, located approximately 15 miles north of Sarasota on Florida’s Intracoastal. Cortez was listed as a historic district on the National Registry of Historic Places in 1995.

“Cortez represents old Florida at its very best,” said John Vandyk, President and CEO of VANDYK group of companies.

“We are delighted to become a part of the local community and continue the legacy of the Seafood Shack Marina and Bar. This is one of the United States’ most beautiful regions and one of its most historic villages, with a cultural integrity and tradition VANDYK will preserve.”

VANDYK has extensive experience in the design and construction of office, retail, industrial, mid and high rise developments, master planned communities including luxury homes.

VANDYK will immediately implement a facility safety and comfort enhancement program including renovations that will include dock repairs and aesthetic enhancements to the Seafood Shack restaurant and bar.
